UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR FOR "MEDICAL DATA SCIENCE AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE" (M/F/X)

The newly established Medical Data Integration Centre (MeDIZ.RUB) at the RUB Medical Faculty campus is seeking to fill the position of a
University Professor for "Medical Data Science and Artificial Intelligence" (m/f/x) (Open Rank: W3, W2 or W2 Tenure Track to W3).
We are looking for a personality for scientific technology development in the field of personalised medicine and omics disciplines. The research focus of the professorship should be in the field of Medical Data Science/Medical Informatics and develop the focus on "personalised medicine through Medical Informatics" in research and teaching. The post holder will develop processes to support translational research and will be actively involved in research with patient data.
For the W2 professorship with W3 tenure track, the appointment is initially for five years as a temporary civil servant. After this period at the latest, the tenure track leads to continued employment as a W3 university professor for life, provided that the required aptitude, qualification and academic performance have been demonstrated in an evaluation procedure and the legal requirements under Section 38 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act (HG NRW) have been met. In addition, the recruitment criteria of §§ 36 and 37 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act apply.
The post holder will be expected to integrate and participate in the faculty’s key research areas (oncology, neurosciences and protein sciences). Close cooperation with institutions of the Faculty of Medicine and the UK RUB in the existing research foci and development areas of Medical Data Science/Medical Informatics as well as with relevant institutions of the RUB, e.g. the Faculties of Computer Science, Mathematics or Biology and Biotechnology, is required. Participation in ongoing and planned local, national and international research projects is envisaged.
This includes the scientific management of the MeDIZ.RUB and the partnership in the Smart Medical Information Technology for Healthcare (SMITH) consortium. The position holder is responsible for the development and operation of the MeDIZ.RUB, with the task of making pseudonymised patient data from care and research at the RUB UK & RUB available for research in an interoperable and data protection-compliant manner. In addition, the job profile includes cross-DIC tasks, including external presentation and the use of synergies at the site for the implementation of further research data infrastructures at the site.
The position holder will teach students of medicine and possibly other relevant fields in the information technology evaluation of studies and research data as well as the development of technologies for personalised medicine.
Applicants must have leadership experience in the field of medical data science/medical informatics with a habilitation, positively evaluated junior professorship or equivalent qualification. In addition to outstanding scientific qualifications, successful acquisition of third-party funding and a willingness to participate in academic self-administration are also required:
- pedagogical aptitude and a high level of commitment to teaching
- willingness to engage in interdisciplinary scientific work (for W3 and W2 tenured positions: proven by corresponding projects/publications)
- scientific profile in medical data science/medical informatics, with a strong commitment to applied research and the translation of new technologies to strengthen personalised medicine (for W3 for life: internationally visible research profile in medical data science/medical informatics, in particular demonstrated by corresponding collaborations, for W2: visible research profile in the aforementioned field)
- the willingness and ability to acquire externally funded research projects (for W3 tenured positions: evidence of significant third-party funding, for W2 tenured positions: evidence of third-party funding)
- with regard to the management tasks associated with the professorship, a sense of responsibility and leadership skills are expected (for W3 tenured professors: evidence of relevant experience and further training, for W2 tenured professors: at least initial experience or further training)
