The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an internationally established university with a 160-year history rooted in the Bauhaus tradition, combining science and technology with art and design. This approach characterizes the Faculties of Media, Architecture & Urbanism, Civil Engineering, and Art & Design. In addition to their subject-specific functions, these faculties are also committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and to forging links between art, science and practice.
The Media Studies Department at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar‘s Faculty of Media is currently inviting applications for the
W3-Professorship
in »History and Theory of Cultural Technologies«
beginning
1 April, 2025.
In terms of both research and teaching, the professorship in History and Theory of Cultural Technologies is a profile-defining part of the Weimar Media Studies Department. It is heavily involved in the acquisition of third-party funding and has USP potential which commands great international recognition. We are therefore looking for an inspirational figure who will be capable of representing research into cultural technologies in Weimar with energy and dynamism, and who will seek to apply her or his own clear impulses to develop the professorship further. For this reason, it is a prerequisite that the successful candidate should have experience with third-party funding in both academic teaching and the supervision of doctoral projects.
The general employment requirements pertain to § 84 ThürHG (Thuringian Higher Education Act). Specific academic requirements for the post include a university degree and an outstanding doctorate, plus one further qualification (preferably a postdoctoral qualification or an evaluated junior professorship) in Media or Cultural Studies, or in a related subject from the field of literature, art theory or philosophy. Candidates are expected to display a comprehensive knowledge of current research into cultural techno¬logy, media theory and media history, as well as having a recognisable individual research profile. Candi¬dates should also provide evidence of their ability to teach academic courses in Media Culture (BA) and Media Studies (MA) in the specific context of the degree programme of the Bauhaus Universität Weimar’s Faculty of Media. Particular importance will be attached to the ability to hold courses in the newly-established English-language degree course in Media Ecologies and to contribute to the content and academic profiling of this field. Candidates will be expected to be able to hold classes in English. In cases where a candidate’s knowledge of German is insufficient for them to hold classes in German and to par-ticipate actively on University committees, they should be prepared to make up this deficit within three years. The successful candidate will further be expected to collaborate with the other professorships of the Media Studies Department, as well as with other university departments and faculties. A further important prerequisite is for the candidate to be prepared to assume responsibility for academic self-administration.
